The 2022 Diamond League in Birmingham was not just a key event for the world’s best athletes – it was a chance to see the newly renovated Alexander Stadium host a top-class international event ahead of that summer’s Commonwealth Games.
The organisers turned to Sunset+Vine with a remit to showcase the new track and stadium to the world, while producing a peerless broadcast of all the events in a packed Track and Field programme.
Sunset+Vine used the experience of our successful coverage of the IAAF World Athletics Championships in 2017 to bring new cameras to the Alexander Stadium.
A railcam and buggy camera provided close-ups of runners as races developed, while a jib at the 200m start and a vertical camera for throwing events gave the viewer a unique perspective. Drone shots also showed off the re-designed Alexander Stadium.
Ten track events and five field competitions, plus medal ceremonies, in a two-hour window, proved a logistical challenge, which required a detailed production plan.
Victories for Dina Asher-Smith, Keely Hodgkinson and Laura Muir in women’s track races and a lifetime best throw by Slovenian future world champion Kristjan Ceh in the discus enthralled the sell-out crowd on a memorable afternoon for UK Athletics and Sunset+Vine.
Sunset+Vine were praised by the event organisers for the seamless way in which all races, key throws and jumps were captured and enhanced by the broadcast.
The event proved a springboard for Sunset+Vine’s award-winning coverage of Birmingham’s 2022 Commonwealth Games.
